Whether or not montelukast can treat a cough needs to be determined by the specific cause of the cough. If the cough is due to allergic factors, montelukast can treat it. Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist, which is an anti-allergy drug. If the patient has a dry cough after exposure to allergens or a cough and wheeze after exercise, montelukast is effective. If the patient’s cough, sputum and fever are due to lung infection, the efficacy of montelukast will be poorer, and should be treated with sensitive antibiotics and additional drugs to relieve cough and resolve sputum.
