Introduction to the treatment of cough in Chinese medicine

Cough is an independent condition and a symptom of many diseases of the lung system. Cough can occur throughout the year, but is more common in winter and spring, and is more likely to develop during seasonal changes and sudden climate changes. It is common for patients to come to the clinic with a cough as their main complaint. Therefore, it is necessary to discuss the diagnosis and treatment of cough. Chinese medicine considers the etiology and pathogenesis of cough to be complex, and clinical examination of the pathogenesis and pathogenesis must be carried out in detail to identify and treat the disease in order to cure it as soon as possible. When using proprietary Chinese medicine, the evidence and medicine must match in order to be effective and eliminate the disease; otherwise, it is ineffective or even aggravates the disease. It is equivalent to acute or chronic bronchitis, some bronchiectasis, chronic pharyngitis, etc. in modern medicine. There are various classifications of cough in Chinese medicine, such as wind-cold attacking the lung, wind-heat offending the lung, wind-dry injury to the lung, internal injury with phlegm-dampness containing the lung, phlegm-heat depressing the lung, liver-fire offending the lung, and deficiency of lung yin, but with the development of the disease it can often be a combination of diseases, such as wind-dry coughing injuring lung yin, which can also lead to deficiency of lung yin, wind-cold coughing not resolved over time, cold depression turning into heat, boiling the fluid in the lung into phlegm, resulting in phlegm-heat depressing the lung. …. In general, there is more wind-cold in spring and winter, more wind-heat in summer, and more wind-dryness in autumn. Coughing for a long time can lead to internal coughing. Now we will mainly talk about the treatment of cough causes at different times of the day. The general cough before bedtime (8-12 p.m.) is related to kidney deficiency and differs between kidney yin deficiency and kidney yang deficiency. Cough in the middle of the night (1-4 hours) is thought to be related to the bladder and can be treated with Si Wu Tang and Ling Gan Wu Wei Jiang Xin Tang. Coughs in the middle of the night (4:00 to 10:00 a.m.) are related to the liver and gallbladder and can be treated with Si Wu Tang and Xiao Feng San. Coughs around 10 am are generally considered to be caused by liver qi offending the lungs, and can be treated with Diabai San and Liver-dispelling herbs. Coughs between 3 and 4 pm are mainly caused by deficiency of lung yin and can be treated with Nourishing Yin and Clearing Lung Soup. Coughs between 4 pm and 8 pm are mainly caused by Liver-Yin deficiency and Liver-Yang hyperactivity offending the lungs, and can be treated by astringent and liver-nourishing drugs plus drugs to clear lung heat. In Chinese medicine, prevention is the first step before illness. For the prevention of cough, 1) pay attention to climate change and prevent cold and keep warm; 2) take part in appropriate physical exercise to enhance physical fitness and improve resistance to disease; 3) pay attention to the regulation of diet; diet should not be sweet, fatty, spicy and salty; and bad habits such as alcoholism and smoking should be stopped to avoid stimulating gases that can harm the lungs.
