Symptoms of cholestasis in pregnant women

Cholestasis during pregnancy is mainly characterized by itching, which varies in degree and is often persistent, mild during the day and intensified at night. Itching mostly begins in the feet and palms and gradually spreads to the proximal extremities. A few patients may have facial itching, but mucous membrane involvement is less common, so nighttime itching is obvious and can severely disrupt sleep, leading to fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. Patients may also have mild jaundice, as well as deepening of the urine color to a strong tea color. The enlarged liver can be palpated during the examination, with soft texture and insignificant pressure pain, and the spleen is usually without obvious tenderness. The patient can take the appropriate medication according to the obstetrician’s instructions, so as to avoid fetal distress caused by cholestasis, so the patient must follow the doctor’s instructions to use the medication.
