Since most antibiotics taken orally will inhibit acetaldehyde dehydrogenase when alcohol is consumed, an acetaldehyde toxic reaction will occur. Patients may experience weakness, dizziness, drowsiness, general flushing, nausea, vomiting, and even a drop in blood pressure and shock, especially when taking oral cephalosporin or furantoin antibiotics, patients may experience a significant disulfiram-like reaction. It is advisable not to drink alcohol after taking levofloxacin hydrochloride.
