How to treat thyroid eye disease

Thyroid eye disease is categorized into non-infiltrative synophthalmos and infiltrative synophthalmos according to the severity of the disease, and the specific treatments are as follows: 1. Non-infiltrative synophthalmos: generally do not need special treatment, mainly active treatment of hyperthyroidism, with the control of hyperthyroidism, synophthalmos will be relieved. Patients with proptosis also need to pay attention to avoid smoking, so as not to cause proptosis aggravation. 2. Infiltrative synophthalmos: in addition to actively treating hyperthyroidism, it can also be treated by local treatment, systemic treatment and surgery. (1) Local treatment: patients need to pay attention to eye rest, can wear tinted glasses to avoid bright light and external stimuli, eyelids can not be closed in the use of antibacterial eye ointment and wear an eye mask during sleep. (2) Systemic treatment: thyroid hormone can be applied to hyperthyroidism with obvious protruding eyes. Immunologic agents such as glucocorticoids, cyclophosphamide, cyclosporine, etc. can also be applied. Rituximab has also been reported to have better efficacy in active proptosis. Postbulbar radiation therapy and plasma exchange can also be applied. (3) Surgery: If hormone therapy and retrobulbar radiation therapy are ineffective, or if the cornea is infected, ulcerated, and the retina and optic nerve are altered by compression, and the patient may be blind, surgery is feasible, and intraorbital decompression surgery is commonly used. Thyroid eye disease patients should consult the doctor in time, under the guidance of professional physicians to avoid delaying the condition.
