How to stop hiccups

Hiccups may be caused by physiological phenomena or by pathologic causes such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and chronic gastritis. It can be treated by drugs and surgery. 1. Physiological phenomenon: such as eating too much, drinking carbonated beverages, nervousness and other reasons, can cause diaphragmatic spasm or carbonated beverages in the stomach to form gas and so on, resulting in hiccups, which belongs to the physiological phenomenon, and generally do not need special treatment. 2. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): It is the reflux of gastroduodenal contents into the esophagus that causes acid reflux, heartburn and other symptoms. Due to the symptoms of acid reflux, patients may also have hiccups. Acid inhibitors such as omeprazole and cimetidine can be used as prescribed by the doctor to inhibit gastric acid and reduce the symptoms of acid reflux, heartburn and hiccups; laparoscopic fundoplication, endoscopic treatment and other surgical procedures can also be used for treatment. 3. Chronic gastritis: It is a chronic inflammatory lesion of the gastric mucosa caused by a variety of etiological factors, which may be due to Helicobacter pylori infection, autoimmunity and other reasons. Due to the increase of gastric acid, patients may also have hiccups. Quadruple therapy, such as omeprazole, clarithromycin, amoxicillin, bismuth potassium citrate, etc., can be used as prescribed by the doctor; gastric mucosal protectants, such as aluminum thioglycollate, etc., can also be used.
