What are the consequences of a relaxed oesophageal sphincter?

A relaxed oesophageal sphincter loses its ability to prevent the reflux of gastroduodenal contents into the oesophagus, often causing discomfort and/or complications, such as reflux and heartburn. Depending on whether it causes erosion and ulceration of the oesophageal mucosa, it is divided into reflux oesophagitis and non-erosive reflux disease.
