Intestinal obstruction causes “mental disorder” in the elderly

Recently, a 70-year-old man surnamed Li appeared unclear, confusion and other phenomena, the family at first thought that the old man had Alzheimer’s disease, sent to the hospital after examination only to know that the old man’s stomach has a huge giant colon.

Li is more than 70 years old, but in the past six months, his family feels that his brain is becoming more and more unclear. A week ago, the old man began to experience nausea and vomiting, and after a CT examination, it was discovered that the old man had a colonic obstruction. The director of the general surgery department of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Southern Medical University, Yu Chunzhao, suspected that this was not a simple intestinal obstruction and recommended surgery. During the surgery, to everyone’s surprise, the thickest part of Li’s giant colon had reached 30cm, and two hands could not hold the huge “balloon”.

Director Yu explained that Li’s abnormal “mental symptoms” were caused by the low sodium and low protein electrolyte disorders caused by the giant colon’s inability to absorb nutrients properly. Therefore, Director Yu reminded the elderly at home, constipation, abdominal pain, wasting symptoms should not be ignored, as soon as possible to the hospital for examination, comprehensive consideration of the condition in order to relieve pain.
