Whether intestinal obstruction affects life expectancy depends on the severity of the disease and the effect of treatment. For simple or adhesive intestinal obstruction, the patient’s condition is mild and can be recovered by active anti-infection treatment through fasting and gastrointestinal decompression, as well as correction of water-electrolyte balance, which generally has a good prognosis and will not affect life expectancy. However, in case of strangulated intestinal obstruction, the patient often combines with severe peritonitis, with obvious pressure pain and rebound pain in the whole abdomen, or even sepsis, fever, and possibly shock and drop in blood pressure, which may be life-threatening and even cause death if surgery is not performed as early as possible.
