When the condition of short tongue tie is mild, babies usually do not experience significant discomfort. If the condition is more serious, symptoms such as difficulty in breastfeeding, difficulty in articulation and abnormalities in oral and maxillofacial development may occur.
1. Difficulty in breastfeeding: When the tongue tie is short, it may affect the tongue’s ability to stick out of the mouth, thus preventing it from sealing and sucking on the nipple and areola, making it difficult to breastfeed, and the baby’s insufficient breastmilk intake will affect its growth and development.
2. Difficulty in articulation: When the tongue tie is short, it may lead to difficulty in articulation, which is mostly detected before school age.
3. Abnormalities in oral and maxillofacial development: a short tongue tie may lead to occlusal deformities, and when the tongue tie attaches too close to the lingual edges of the front teeth, it can lead to gum recession, thus affecting local bone resorption.
For babies with short tongue tie, parents need to bring them for examination in time and cooperate with the doctor for treatment, which may affect the function of the tongue if not treated actively.
