Swollen tear ducts in the eyes are usually a sign of inflammation of the tear ducts, mostly due to bacterial or viral infections. The symptoms may include localized swelling and pain over the orbit and edema of the upper eyelid or ptosis, with significant pressure pain when touching the area. Early symptomatic treatment is required for this condition. Depending on the cause, antibiotics or antiviral medications are needed, along with localized hot compresses for the eyelids. If the inflammation is significant and a local abscess forms, early incision and drainage is required to avoid spreading the infection. The recovery time for this condition is usually about two weeks, or possibly longer if the infecting bacteria are more virulent.
