Detailed Steps for Postoperative Rehabilitation of Achilles Tendon Rupture

Postoperative rehabilitation training for Achilles tendon rupture is divided into three stages in chronological order.
1. 1~3 weeks after surgery: within 1 day after surgery, perform isometric contraction of the quadriceps muscle on the affected side, 2 days later, perform toe extension and flexion activities, and perform contraction of the triceps muscle of the calf to prevent local adhesion. 3 days later, you can help the affected limb to get out of bed without bearing weight.
After 2 weeks, remove the wound suture and practice straight leg raising. 3 weeks after initial healing, the long leg cast can be shortened to the knee joint, and start practicing knee and ankle joint movement in bed, and the active flexion and extension activities should be carried out without resistance.
2. 4~6 weeks after operation: at this time, the surgical incision has healed and can bear certain pulling, you can carry out foot roller exercise to help ankle joint function recovery, and practice squatting at the same time. 4 weeks later, remove the plaster and use the rehabilitation exercise instrument to carry out the rehabilitation training. 6 weeks later, use the special orthopaedic shoes to support the crutches to go down to the ground, and gradually practice walking function and so on.
3. 8 weeks~6 months after surgery: Heel lifting exercises will be started at 8 weeks after surgery, and walking with crutches will be abandoned step by step. After 3 months, the Achilles tendon and ankle joint activity function has been improved, you can gradually transition from slow walking to fast walking exercises to increase the amount of activity, but you should not do large jumping movements to prevent falling and rupturing the Achilles tendon again.
After 6 months, if the muscle strength of the triceps is the same as that of the healthy side, the patient can gradually resume professional training.
Rehabilitation treatment after Achilles tendon rupture should follow the principle of gradual and orderly progress, and be carried out according to the principle of walking, jogging, running and jumping under the treatment of professional rehabilitation doctors. If there is any discomfort, consult a doctor in time.
