What to do with a broken chalazion

A chalazion, also known as a blepharocyst, needs to be cleaned around the eye after rupture and treated with antibiotic eye ointment and other medications as prescribed by the doctor to promote recovery. Patients with chalazion cysts may have elevated swellings on the eyelids, which may rupture on their own and discharge gelatinous contents. Patients need to use cotton swabs soaked in saline to clean around the eyes, and after the contents of the cysts are completely discharged, they can be sterilized with povidone-iodine and kept locally clean. Patients can use antibiotic medication, such as erythromycin ophthalmic ointment, as prescribed by the doctor. However, if the cyst is not discharged and secondary infection occurs, patients may experience symptoms of inflammatory irritation such as redness, swelling and pain in the eyelids. It is recommended that patients with blepharocysts seek timely medical attention to assess their condition and follow doctor’s instructions for treatment.
