Four Substance Soup is composed of Angelica sinensis, Radix Paeoniae Alba, Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong and Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata, and its function is to tonify and regulate blood, which can be used to treat the symptoms of deficiency of blood in the camp and blood, such as palpitations and insomnia, irregular menstruation, dizziness, pain in the umbilicus and abdomen, and lack of blushing color in the face. In this formula, Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata nourishes Yin and replenishes Blood as the principal medicine, Radix Angelicae Sinensis replenishes Blood and harmonizes Blood as the ministerial medicine, Radix Paeoniae Alba nourishes Blood and astringes Yin, Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong invigorates Blood and promotes circulation of Qi as the adjuvant.
Ophiopogon is slightly cold in nature, sweet and bitter in taste, with the effect of moistening the lung and clearing the heart, nourishing Yin and generating body fluid. There is no contraindication between maitong and the drugs in Si Wu Tang, so if the patient has indications for maitong, maitong can be added to Si Wu Tang. If the patient has no indications for maitong, it is not recommended to add maitong to Si Wu Tang.
