Patients who have torn ligaments need about 6 to 8 weeks to recover.
Surgery is often required for patients who have developed this type of injury in order to repair the torn ligament with sutures. If the injury is too severe, the ligament may need to be completely removed and replaced with an autologous or artificial ligament.
In most cases, it takes about 4 weeks for the initial healing to occur. After that, it takes about 2 to 4 weeks for the patient to become functional. If all goes well, the patient may be able to regain normal function, such as normal flexion and extension of the joint, about 6 to 8 weeks after surgery.
However, at this time, the strength of the joint is still weak, and the patient is not yet able to perform vigorous joint activities. These patients still need to protect the affected joints and continue to perform functional exercises under the supervision of a doctor. These patients may be able to return to a level of vigorous activity after 3 months.
It is recommended that patients receive standardized orthopedic treatment after the onset of the disease in order to recover as quickly as possible.
