General knowledge of cerebral palsy

  Pediatric cerebral palsy (or cerebral palsy) is a permanent, but variable, motor and postural abnormality based on non-progressive lesions of the brain caused by various causes between gestation and the neonatal period. It is mostly associated with mental retardation, epilepsy, and behavioral abnormalities. Our survey in 1997-1999 showed that the prevalence of cerebral palsy was 1.2‰-2.7‰ among children aged 1-7 years. Prenatal factors: chronic intrauterine hypoxia, maternal factors, genetic factors; 2. Intrapartum factors: acute intrauterine hypoxia, fetal factors; 3. Postpartum factors: neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, convulsions, trauma, intracranial hemorrhage, respiratory distress syndrome, etc.  The three major causative factors of cerebral palsy in China are: asphyxia, prematurity, and severe jaundice.  How to detect and treat children with cerebral palsy at an early stage?  1. The child has only a small amount of movement, the body is flaccid and weak, and it is in an inverted “U” shape when held in a prone position; 2. Asphyxia is obvious after birth. Delayed respiration is a common cause of brain damage; 3, motor development is significantly delayed. For example, head lifting, sitting or moving movements appear later than other children; 4, abnormal movement patterns. For example, the hand does not reach forward to retrieve objects, or uses only one hand, and stands or walks on the forefoot and toes, and has an awkward posture; 5, feeding difficulties. The child often has difficulty sucking, swallowing and chewing, and often choking and coughing; 6. The child’s limbs or trunk is stiff, or the whole body is flabby and weak, so it is difficult to dress and bathe the child; 7. Involuntary movements appear. Often occurs after the age of 1 year, manifested as uncontrolled limbs and facial movements; 8, abnormal behavior, easy to cry, excited, or abnormally quiet, not crying and not laughing.
