Principles of treatment and home rehabilitation for cerebral palsy

Cerebral palsy, referred to as cerebral palsy, is usually a central motor disorder caused by non-progressive brain injury or abnormal brain development from prenatal to 1 year after birth from various causes. The incidence of cerebral palsy is approximately 1.2-2.5 per 1,000. Clinical manifestations vary depending on the subtype. In general, the main features are lagging motor development compared to normal children of the same age, hard or soft limbs, and abnormal motor posture. If such abnormalities are found, the child should be seen by a neurorehabilitation specialist in a timely manner. The treatment of cerebral palsy adheres to the principle of comprehensive rehabilitation, which can include physical therapy, role therapy, speech therapy, psychological behavior therapy, electrical stimulation therapy, medication, surgery, and can be combined with traditional Chinese medicine treatment, such as tuina, acupuncture, acupoint injection, ear acupuncture, etc. 2.Family rehabilitation training should be formulated as a family training plan. The plan should focus on improving function and preventing secondary disability, but for children with particularly serious conditions, easy care and reducing family burden should be the main goals. It usually includes: understanding of the child’s condition and arrangement of daily life; stretching treatment of spastic muscles; targeted muscle strength and joint mobility training; reinforcement training of functional active activities; use of assistive devices such as orthotics, chairs, standing frames and wheelchairs, etc.
