Does retinal detachment laser treatment hurt?

Retinal detachment laser treatment patients do experience pain. The level of pain varies from patient to patient because each patient has a different pain tolerance and the laser energy required for laser treatment is different. Some patients who are less pain tolerant or have more cloudy crystals that require more laser energy may experience more pain, while some patients who are more pain tolerant or have less cloudy crystals that require less laser energy may not feel any significant pain. Retinal detachment laser treatment is usually performed under surface anesthesia, and most patients can tolerate it and cooperate with the treatment. If the pain is significant and the patient is unable to tolerate it, a small number of laser treatments may be considered.
