Is orthodontics painful?

Some people say it hurts and some say it doesn’t. Does it hurt or not? I often have patients who say: I want to straighten my teeth for a long time, but people say it hurts a lot to get teeth, I am afraid of pain and fear of affecting my life, so I have been hesitant. As a result, the best time for orthodontics was missed. So orthodontics in the end does it hurt? How much does it hurt? How do you do when it hurts? First of all, the correct treatment, orthodontics is not too painful. Often, friends who say that orthodontics is painful and advise you not to do it have not experienced orthodontic treatment themselves. Instead, they “hear” and exaggerate what others feel. I often ask my patients if it hurts, and many times the answer I get makes me laugh: “Doctor, I don’t feel anything, just make it tighter for me, I’m not afraid of pain, I want to straighten faster.” Pain does not equal orthodontic speed, this false logic aside, just to show that the discomfort of orthodontics is acceptable to most people. How to deal with the discomfort in orthodontics? 1, toothache Usually push the teeth orthodontic force is very slight, you will feel a little “tight” teeth after the first bonding brackets and each follow-up, the root of the tooth will feel the pressure of 2-3 days (about a week for adults) of hidden pain, 6 hours after the force of the most obvious pain, and then gradually reduced, expressed as a sense of chewing weakness, tooth floating sense. This is normal and does not require special treatment or analgesic medication. Sometimes a similar situation may occur a week before the follow-up appointment. If the pain is severe or continues to increase, please communicate with the doctor promptly. Do not adjust the wire by yourself and break the brackets to prevent damage to the teeth. 2, the wire stuck mouth pain Wire in the orthodontic process as the teeth move in alignment, will gradually with the arch length mismatch, the tail end of the “elongation” back to the mucosa, affecting speech or chewing, inducing ulcers, pain. You should go to the hospital and ask the doctor to reduce the overgrown wire. It can be treated in the nearest hospital, such as dental clinics, dental clinics, and dental departments of large hospitals. If you can’t see a doctor in time for personal reasons, you can use orthodontic protective wax or cotton or chewing gum to wrap the end of the wire to isolate its stimulation of the nearby mucosa. 3, oral ulcers ulcers are a kind of rice-sized white mucosal surface, slightly concave in the middle of the local mucosal inflammation, usually the cause of systemic immunity, nutrition (vitamin deficiency), female menstrual cycle related. It is self-healing, i.e., it will heal without treatment in about a week, and can be combined with medication to relieve pain, promote healing, and prevent infection of the wound. Although brackets are a foreign body, good quality brackets are small, have well-polished surfaces and rounded corners, and usually do not cause ulcers. If ulcers recur in the location corresponding to the bracket, it is recommended to wrap the bracket with mucosal protective wax (consult your doctor) to isolate the irritation. Alternatively, a film-type ulcer patch can be purchased at the pharmacy and applied to the ulcer surface to isolate the irritation and promote healing by slow-release medication. 4, occlusal joint pain The occlusal joint is scientifically known as the temporomandibular joint, and pain in the preauricular region is often sub-articular pain. In orthodontics, the occlusal relationship changes daily as the teeth move. Sometimes you may feel that your jaw cannot find its position, and your joint may become tense, painful, and popping, to communicate with your doctor in time.
