Currently, with the increasing awareness of oral health care, more and more people are undergoing orthodontic treatment, but some patients are afraid to undergo treatment because of the problem of pain during the orthodontic process. In fact, the pain during orthodontic treatment is usually mild and some pain can be avoided. Among the patients’ complaints, the pain of the initial orthodontic braces is the most obvious, and it comes from two main sources. First, when first wearing braces, patients tend to feel “grinding” in their mouths, which can cause mouth ulcers and pain. Generally, the initial discomfort of braces is over in a week or so, and the discomfort of the first week can be avoided with the proper use of orthodontic protective wax. Secondly, when wearing braces, teeth start to be stressed, periodontal tissues will be altered and some inflammatory media will be produced to cause pain, which usually starts about 5 hours after first wearing braces, and is most obvious in 2-3 days, and the pain is basically eliminated in about 5 days. Most patients do not have symptoms, and the pain is usually 1-2 days, and the pain is lighter compared to when the braces were first worn. In addition, in recent years, thanks to the development of bonding technology, the orthodontic process is rarely divided, which also avoids the pain caused by the separation of teeth. In conclusion, pain during orthodontic treatment is not a terrible problem as long as the doctor’s instructions are strictly followed.
