Hyperventilation, also known as hyperventilation syndrome, is a group of syndromes caused by the abnormal regulation of the body’s respiratory nerve center and excessive ventilation beyond the normal physiological ventilation needs. After hyperventilation, the patient may experience shortness of breath, wheezing, dyspnea and numbness of the limbs, which may cause dizziness, headache and, in severe cases, convulsions, seizures and palpitations. Excessive discharge of carbon dioxide and excessive inhalation of oxygen may lead to respiratory alkalosis, and in severe cases, suffocation, ventilatory dysfunction, respiratory failure, and shock.
