With standard treatment, lumbar disc herniation can be cured clinically or in clinical remission. Standard treatment must be early detection, early diagnosis and early treatment. After standardized treatment, 90%-95% of lumbar disc herniation can be treated by conservative therapy, i.e. without surgery, such as bed rest, traction, acupuncture, physiotherapy, massage, hot compress, fumigation, plastering, physical therapy, etc. 90% or even 95% of the patients can achieve the disappearance of lumbar pain and numbness, and live completely as normal. Only 5%-10% of patients still cannot be relieved after standard treatment, or develop lower limb muscle atrophy, or develop cauda equina syndrome, i.e. incontinence and numbness in the perineum. It is still possible to surgically remove the herniated nucleus pulposus to relieve the compression of the nerve and eliminate the symptoms of numbness and pain. Therefore, regardless of protrusion, bulge or detachment, surgery is the last choice and only a few patients need surgical treatment.
