This is a mixed infection caused by a dysbiosis of the normal vaginal flora. As the lactobacilli in the vagina decrease, other bacteria in the vagina grow and multiply, mainly Gardnerella and anaerobic bacteria. The metabolites of these bacteria can change the biochemical composition of vaginal secretions, resulting in an increase in the pH of the vagina and an increase in amines, organic acids and enzymes, resulting in an increase in vaginal secretions and a fishy odor, which is aggravated after sexual intercourse, and an increased, thin vaginal discharge with mild vulvar itching.
