How to treat atretic deep overjaw

Atretic deep overjet generally refers to a degree III deep overjet with atretic dentition of the anterior teeth. The treatment methods include maxillary plane guide plate appliance, fixed appliance and orthognathic surgery.

1. Wearing maxillary plane guide plate orthodontic appliance: it is suitable for adolescents with deep overjet of anterior teeth with normal height of alveolar process of anterior teeth and insufficient height of posterior alveolar bone. By wearing maxillary planar guide, the height of the back teeth will be raised to achieve the effect of treating atretic deep overjet.

2. Fixed orthodontic appliance treatment: If atresia deep overjet is accompanied by malocclusion, it is necessary to install maxillary fixed orthodontic appliance first, level the upper arch, and then install mandibular orthodontic appliance, together with intermaxillary traction, to open the atresia deep overjet of the anterior teeth, and to improve the occlusal relationship of the posterior teeth.

3. Orthognathic surgery: For adults with atresia overjet, orthognathic surgery is often needed, such as subapical osteotomy to reduce the height of the anterior alveoli, and then fixed orthodontic treatment of anterior deep overjet.

If you have atresia deep overjet, you should consult an orthodontist in time for a complete examination, and the orthodontist will use the appropriate treatment method according to the patient’s age and dental specifics.
