The sudden onset of irritability and anxiety should be considered as the presence of an anxiety disorder. Psychotherapy and medication are needed for such patients, and supportive psychotherapy includes comfort, reassurance, encouragement, and appropriate assurance that clear and convincing explanations of somatic symptoms are sufficient to alleviate or eliminate the patient’s symptoms. Muscle relaxation exercises may be appropriate and are beneficial in inducing sleep. Medications such as benzodiazepines can be used to relieve anxiety, induce sleep, and eliminate muscle spasms.
