Is high homocysteine serious?

Hyperhomocysteinemia, as a risk factor for ischemic cerebrovascular disease, is not terrible when elevated, but it needs to be controlled by giving relevant medications, such as oral vitamin B12, folic acid tablets, and vitamin B6, which have the effect of reducing blood homocysteine levels. Blood homocysteine, itself an intermediate product in the metabolism of methionine and cysteine, can be broken down and metabolized in the body, and under normal circumstances, the concentration is maintained at a low level. Elevated blood homocysteine due to various causes, called hyperhomocysteinemia, increases the risk of ischemic cardiovascular disease and therefore requires aggressive control, as well as further search for other risk factors, such as hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and hyperglycemia.
