Sexual intercourse generally does not cause hypokalemia. Hypokalemia may be caused by insufficient potassium intake, excessive potassium loss and abnormal potassium distribution.
1. Insufficient potassium intake: If the patient is starved for a long time, fasted for a long time after surgery, or needs to maintain life through parenteral nutrition or intravenous nutrition, the proportion of potassium ions is too low in the preparation of nutritional solution, which may cause hypokalemia.
2. Excessive loss of potassium: If patients with severe diarrhea or massive vomiting, or long-term application of potassium-excreting diuretics, such as hydrochlorothiazide, furosemide, bumetanide, etc., which leads to the excretion of potassium components from the body, thus causing hypokalemia.
3. Abnormal potassium distribution: It refers to the transfer of potassium into the cells, which is more common in patients with increased synthesis of insulin-infused glycogen, familial periodic paralysis, cottonseed oil poisoning, etc., and may cause hypokalemia.
If patients are diagnosed with hyperkalemia, it is recommended to go to the hospital for relevant examinations in time.
