What is stage IIB breast cancer?

Stage IIB breast cancer usually refers to breast cancer lumps >5 cm but without invasion of axillary lymph nodes, or breast cancer lumps before 2~5 cm with infiltration of axillary lymph nodes, which belongs to intermediate stage breast cancer. Breast cancer is divided into four stages. Stage I represents that the tumor is only confined to the breast, <2 cm, and the five-year survival rate of the patient can be as high as 100 percent. Stage Ⅱ represents that the tumor size is between 2~5 cm and may have metastasized to the axillary lymph nodes. Stage III represents a tumor that is already possibly >5 cm, or has metastasized to the axilla or nearby lymph nodes. Stage IV, on the other hand, represents that the tumor has metastasized to other parts of the body, such as bones, brain, and liver. Once diagnosed with stage IIB breast cancer, the preferred treatment is radical mastectomy. If the patient belongs to middle-aged or elderly women, total mastectomy is an option. The aim of the surgery is to remove all breast cancer masses to avoid residual and late recurrence and metastasis. It is recommended that patients with stage IIB breast cancer should go to the hospital in time and take effective treatment under the guidance of the doctor.
