How to Treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is often treated with general treatment, etiologic treatment, non-invasive ventilator treatment, oral orthodontic device treatment and surgical treatment.
1. General treatment: quit smoking and drinking, avoid the use of sedative and muscarinic drugs, actively control weight, try to sleep on the side, and raise the head of the bed appropriately.
2. Etiologic treatment: systematic treatment of diseases that can cause and aggravate the disease is needed. For example, chronic rhinitis, sinusitis, deviated nasal septum, adenoid hypertrophy, tonsillar hypertrophy and other local diseases that lead to airway narrowing; hypothyroidism, diabetes and other systemic diseases.
3. Non-invasive ventilator treatment: moderate to severe patients with this disease can be treated with continuous positive airway pressure ventilation and bi-level positive airway pressure ventilation, in order to eliminate night snoring, improve sleep structure, improve nocturnal apnea and hypoventilation, and correct nocturnal hypoxemia, and then improve daytime drowsiness, headache, and memory loss and other symptoms.
4. Oral Orthodontic Appliance Treatment: By shifting the position of the lower jaw forward, the root of the tongue and the hyoid bone will be shifted forward, and the upper airway will be enlarged. It is commonly used in mild and moderate cases of the disease and those who cannot tolerate non-invasive positive pressure ventilation, cannot be operated or have poor surgical results.
5. Surgical treatment: only applicable to patients with abnormal upper airway anatomy that can be relieved by surgery, and the indications for surgery should be strictly controlled. Mainly include: nasal septum correction, uvula palatopharyngoplasty, chin and tongue muscle anterior transfer, mandibular anterior transfer and hyoid suspension.
When obstructive sleep apnea syndrome occurs, it is necessary to actively consult a doctor for a systematic examination, to clarify the cause of the disease, and then follow the doctor’s instructions to standardize the treatment.
