What about the protruding cervical bones at the back of the neck?

There are many patients in the outpatient clinic who will consult the doctor about the protruding bone at the back of the neck. In fact, there is no need to panic at all, because it is only the bone that can be felt, and the intervertebral disc can definitely not be felt, so the protruding bone in the neck and the protruding disc are two different things. A normal person will definitely feel a raised bone as long as he or she is lowering his or her head, and that bone is the spinous process of cervical 7; if two can be felt, they may be the spinous process of cervical 7 and thoracic 1. If only the bones protrude without pain or any discomfort, it is understood that this is a normal thing and can be observed by regular follow-up. If there is pain, numbness in the lower extremities, pain in the arms, numbness and weakness, then further tests, such as CT, MRI, etc., may be needed. There are three common types of herniated discs in the cervical spine, spinal cord type, nerve root type, and mixed type, and the mixed type is a mixture of nerve root type and spinal cord type together. Surgery is more concerned with the performance of the spinal cord type and the nerve root type. The main manifestation of spinal cord type is the injury of upper motor neuron, and the main manifestation in the patient is the increase of muscle tone in the lower limbs, the feeling of walking like stepping on cotton, the feeling of banding in the chest and abdomen, and the weakness of walking in the lower limbs, and after a long time, they will feel sore and soft, and the pathological reflexes and active tendon reflexes will appear on physical examination. The nerve root type mainly manifests as upper limb symptoms, such as localized pain and numbness in the upper limbs, which is more intense and may affect the patient’s sleep in severe cases.
