What is “osteoarthritis”?

Osteoarthritis is a condition in which all the structural components of the tissues within and around the joint: cartilage, subchondral bone, joint capsule, synovial membrane and tendons and ligaments, undergo pathological changes of varying degrees and lose their normal function and form, resulting in pain and movement disorders and, in severe cases, joint disability of the affected limb. Therefore, fundamentally, osteoarthritis involves not only cartilage degeneration and osteophytes, but also degenerative lesions involving various tissues of the entire joint organ.
