The appropriate dose of vitamin D supplement should be selected in relation to the infant’s age in months and disease.
1. Full-term infants can start vitamin D supplementation one week after birth, and 400U/d should be maintained until two years of age.
Preterm infants start vitamin D supplementation a few days after birth, 800U/d daily for 3 months, and then change to 400U/d after 3 months until 2 years of age.
2. Children with rickets should be given increased levels of vitamin D and the dose should be adjusted when appropriate, as prescribed by a doctor.
3. Vitamin D is usually made into drops that can be cut open and dropped directly into the infant’s mouth or mixed with food once a day. Vitamin drops are convenient for infants to use and solve the problem of swallowing difficulties.
Vitamin D supplementation is recommended under medical supervision.
