It is not recommended to take Ma Xing Shi Gan Tang and Reed Stem Tang together because of their overlapping effects. Ma Xing Shi Gan Tang is from “Treatise on Typhoid Fever”. This formula is composed of gypsum, ephedra, roasted licorice and almonds. It has the efficacy of pungent coolness to resolve the surface, clearing the lung and calming asthma. It is mainly used for treating the symptoms of exogenous wind, evil heat and congestion of the lungs, such as unresolved body heat, thirst, sweating or no sweating, coughing and shortness of breath, or even nasal fan. The adverse effects and contraindications of Ma Xing Shi Gan Tang are not clear. Reed Stem Soup is from “Secret Essentials of Wai Tai”. This formula is composed of Coix Seed, Peach Kernel, Reed Stem and Melon Petal. It has the functions of clearing lung and resolving phlegm (removing lung heat and dissolving phlegm), expelling blood stasis and draining pus (promoting the discharge of blood stasis and pus). Reed Stem Soup is indicated for treating lung carbuncle with phlegm and stagnant phlegm, heat and toxin congestion, with symptoms such as slight fever, coughing and phlegm, even coughing up and vomiting foul-smelling pus and blood, and vague pain in the chest. The adverse effects and contraindications of Reed Stem Soup are not clear. Both Ma Xing Shi Gan Tang and Reed Stem Tang can clear lung heat, so it is not recommended to take them together. The medication should be taken under medical supervision.
