Focus on Alzheimer’s

September 21 is World Alzheimer’s Awareness Day, also known as World Alzheimer’s Day, when a series of events are organized in more than 60 countries and regions around the world. “World Alzheimer’s Day was established by the International Alzheimer’s Association at its tenth meeting in Edinburgh, England, in 1994. Every year, many countries and regions around the world organize this day to make the whole society understand that the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease is very important and should be given enough attention. There are currently 5 million Alzheimer’s patients in China, accounting for more than a quarter of the total number of cases in the world, and there are an average of 300,000 new cases each year. The prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease in China has been increasing significantly with age: 8.26% over the age of 75 and 11.4% over the age of 80; there are more women than men suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, and the number of women suffering from Alzheimer’s disease over the age of 60 is usually 2 to 3 times higher than that of matched men. Alzheimer’s disease is a serious intellectual disability that takes patients from mild memory and cognitive impairment to a final vegetative state for years or even decades, which is a painful process for both patients and families. Alzheimer’s disease is like an “epidemic” with a rapid increase in incidence among the elderly. What is more worrying is that most of the patients do not consult the hospital in time or do not consult the hospital at all, and their quality of life is low, which should attract the attention of the society and families. According to the survey, the consultation rate of mild dementia patients in China is 14%, the consultation rate of moderate dementia patients is 25%, and the consultation rate of severe dementia patients is 34%. 47% of the caregivers of the elderly with dementia believe that the patient’s condition is the result of natural aging. The medical community in China attaches more importance to the occurrence and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease and has named September 17 as “Chinese Alzheimer’s Prevention Day”. All walks of life should care about the elderly at different levels in their old age and improve their quality of life. We should create more communication and activity opportunities for them, so that more elderly people can be active and happy in their old age, and delay the occurrence of dementia.
