Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a disease characterized by frequent urination, urinary urgency, difficulty in urination, and even urinary retention, and is commonly seen in older men. This disease belongs to the Chinese medicine “retention of urine”, and its occurrence is mostly related to old age and frailty, dietary fat, sweet, thick and greasy, too much indoor labor and other factors. Currently, commonly used Chinese medicines include Prostat Shutong Capsule and Prostat Urinary Retention Capsule. Prostate Shutong Capsule is composed of cypress, red peony, trigonelline, Poria cocos, vervain, tiger’s ear, amaranth, etc. It has the efficacy of clearing away heat and removing dampness (removing heat and dampness in the body), resolving stasis and dispersing stagnation and is used for the symptoms of chronic prostatitis and prostatic hyperplasia, such as frequent urination, urinary urgency, urinary dribbling, perineum, lower abdomen or lumbar-sacral pain, and dampness of the scrotum. Prostatic Retention of Urine Capsule is composed of Astragalus, Fritillariae Cirrhosae, Dong Quai Fruit, Peach Kernel, Cinnamon Branches, Epimedium, Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae, Radix Bupleurum Chinense, Poria, Codonopsis Poriae, Citrus aurantium Lobatae, Sichuan Cowslips, with the effect of benefiting qi and warming yang, activating blood circulation and inducing diuresis, and is used to treat retention of urine caused by deficiency of the kidneys and blood stasis, with symptoms of frequent urination, delayed urination with great effort, residual leaking after urination, lumbar and knee soreness and tenderness (a sensation of soreness and weakness of the lumbar area and the knees), as well as prostate enlargement seen with the above mentioned symptoms. Adverse effects of the above drugs is not clear, during the treatment period prohibit smoking, alcohol, abstain from sexual intercourse.
