The most accurate pulmonary artery examination is to do right heart catheterization to measure pulmonary artery pressure. By doing the right heart catheterization, the systolic, diastolic and mean pressures of the pulmonary arteries can be understood, as well as the right atrial pressure, right cardiac output, pulmonary capillary wedge pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance. A pulmonary arteriogram can also be done, in which contrast is injected through a catheter and radiography of the pulmonary arteries will reveal whether there is a thrombus in the pulmonary vessels. In addition, a pulmonary artery CTA, which is a non-invasive test, can be done to understand the morphology and structure of the pulmonary arteries.
