Local anesthesia has become the preferred form of anesthesia for hernia repair due to its many advantages such as less pain, quicker recovery, fewer complications and lower cost. Unless the patient has a recurrent hernia, or a very large hernia, or is extremely obese, most patients are suitable for local anesthesia, and the surgeon will advise the patient and family on the choice of anesthesia based on the patient’s specific condition.
