Who is at risk for osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis and is the leading cause of joint disability in the elderly. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease, and in simple terms, osteoarthritis is the aging of joints. It usually causes damage to weight-bearing joints such as the hand, knee and lumbar spine, and can seriously affect the patient’s normal life. The incidence of osteoarthritis is highest in the elderly and increases with age, but it is also important to know that osteoarthritis is not just for the elderly. The following groups of people are also prone to osteoarthritis. 1, people who are too obese, obesity has a certain impact on the occurrence of osteoarthritis of the knee. The incidence of osteoarthritis in overweight people is much higher than in normal people, and the age of onset tends to be earlier. Women are more common than men, especially post-menopausal women. 55 years of age and more women suffer from osteoarthritis, so it is thought that the reduction of endogenous estrogen may be one of the risk factors for osteoarthritis. 3, racial factors, Westerners have a high incidence of osteoarthritis of the hip joint, while Easterners have a high incidence of osteoarthritis of the knee. 4, patients who have had untreated joint injuries are also an important factor in causing osteoarthritis: such as ligament damage around the joint causing joint instability, meniscal injury or intra-articular fracture. 5, some special occupations are prone to osteoarthritis: such as miners, cotton pickers, heavy laborers, teachers, salespeople, professional athletes or dancers, etc., mainly due to long-term wear and tear of joint cartilage caused by high-intensity stress or injury. 6, there are behavioral habits, such as artificially changing the biomechanical environment of the joint can trigger osteoarthritis: such as wearing high-heeled shoes, walking increases the stress that the knee joint is normally subjected to, and changes the knee joint subjected to 7, long years of stair climbers, climbing stairs can easily induce osteoarthritis, because the knee joint is repeatedly involved. A survey has pointed out that people living in buildings without elevators are several percent more likely to suffer from this disease than those living in bungalows at the same age. 8, the influence of genetic factors, congenital joint structure abnormalities and defects (such as congenital hip dislocation, acetabular dysplasia, etc.), cartilage or bone metabolism abnormalities, genetic factors related to obesity and osteoporosis, etc. can cause osteoarthritis. In short, elderly people, obese people, people with a history of joint injury, and people with a family history of osteoarthritis are prone to osteoarthritis.
