Why should babies and fingers have surgery early? This is my opinion

Why do we always emphasize that babies with syndactyly should have surgery early? Because we consider all aspects of the child’s finger function, postoperative outcome and psychological health. There are many kinds of syndactyly, if the ring little finger and thumb index finger are together, if they are not separated in time, it will limit the growth and development of the fingers, because the length difference between them is obvious, and the fingers will affect each other, and the deformity will become more and more serious. In the case of the middle index finger and middle ring finger together, although the length difference between them is not so great, but still has an impact on the function, appearance and mental health. When the child is young, he or she will not have a clear understanding of the conjoined fingers, but when the child grows up and goes to kindergarten and comes into contact with other children, there will be a clear contrast between them, and for some children who are more introverted, the memory of this deformity may have an impact on the child’s mental health. Therefore, we recommend that the surgery be done when the child is young, usually around 6 months of age, when the child’s bones are softer and easier to correct, and the postoperative recovery is faster, and most importantly, it is more favorable to the child’s physical and mental development.
