What are varicose veins of the lower extremities

Varicose veins of the lower extremities are elongated, tortuous and varicose saphenous veins and superficial veins, which are more common in people who work in a standing position for a long period of time, have a high intensity of physical activity and are sedentary. Weak vein walls, defective valves and elevated pressure in the superficial veins are the main causes of varicose veins in the lower extremities. Varicose veins of the lower extremities are most common with varicose saphenous veins, small saphenous vein varicose veins alone are less common, and left lower extremity is more common than right lower extremity. The main clinical manifestations are dilatation and tortuosity of the superficial veins of the lower limbs, a feeling of heaviness and weakness in the lower limbs, mild swelling of the ankles and trophic changes in the skin of the boot area, such as hyperpigmentation, dermatitis, eczema, and ulcer formation. Varicose veins of the lower limbs are easier to diagnose and treatment can be non-surgical (e.g. sclerotherapy and compression therapy) as well as surgical.
