What if I don’t pass the newborn hearing screening?

The newborn hearing screening program is otoacoustic emissions. Otoacoustic emissions are audio energy produced in the cochlea and released into the external ear canal via the auditory chain and tympanic membrane conduction. Sometimes, newborns do not pass the hearing screening due to some secretions in the ear canal after birth, such as amniotic fluid. If the newborn still does not pass the screening, a diagnostic hearing test is required to confirm the diagnosis. Diagnostic hearing tests include brainstem evoked potentials, 40Hz correlation potentials, and auditory steady-state evoked potentials. If the final diagnosis of hearing failure is congenital sensorineural deafness, a hearing aid or cochlear implant is recommended, depending on the degree of deafness loss.
