During clinic visits and online consultations, many people with cervical spondylosis ask, “Doctor, I hear a ringing sound when I move my neck, is there a problem? I’m so worried”. The fact that there are still a few people asking this question means that this is a very common phenomenon. So is there a problem? The answer is that most people do not have problems, but a small number of people have problems. The key to distinguishing whether there is a problem or not is whether it is accompanied by other cervical spine symptoms. Most people have no problem because it is a physiological “popping” of the cervical spine, which is often crisp and not accompanied by other symptoms of cervical spondylosis. There are two main reasons for this: 1. gas escape. Between our body joints, there is a liquid called synovial fluid, which is used to lubricate the joints. This synovial fluid contains some gases, such as oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide. These gases form bubbles in the synovial fluid. When we stretch our joints, the gases in the synovial fluid run off rapidly, causing hiccups. 2. Joint displacement. When we move our joints, the tendon ligaments shift. When the tendon ligaments return to their original position, you will sometimes hear hiccups. A small number of people have problems because they also have neck symptoms, headaches, dizziness, neck and shoulder pain, numbness in the upper extremities, and other symptoms that are aggravated or reduced by the appearance of the ringing. This time we should be careful of the following causes: 1, the soft tissues or ligaments of the neck rub against each other to make a sound. The muscles in our neck are strictly speaking divided into many, many layers. When we move around, the layers are sliding against each other. When we have muscle strain, there is some local inflammatory reaction, and the inflammatory reaction will make the sliding between the muscles not so smooth, so there will be a ringing sound when we move around. After the sound occurs, the original strain parts will be relaxed, we sometimes feel comfortable after two sounds, but not for long, comfortable after a time, the symptoms will come back, the main reason is also soft tissue strain. 2, arthritis will destroy the cartilage tissue between the joints, resulting in joint contact surface is no longer smooth, or even semi-dislocation. In this condition, joint friction will produce a ringing sound, accompanied by pain in the neck. Sometimes the sound is a reset of the cervical subluxation, and the symptoms are relieved when heard. I used to have a patient who had been sick for a long time and had degeneration and instability of the cervical joints, so he made a homemade tractor, and when he was uncomfortable with the cervical spine, he pulled with this tractor and heard the ringing sound, then he was comfortable, his head did not sink, and his neck did not hurt, but over time the cervical joints became more and more lax, and finally he could only be treated surgically. Therefore, if only the cervical spine popping, the appearance is not red or swollen, and do not feel pain, not accompanied by activity disorders belong to the physiological popping, do not need special treatment, and do not need to be overly nervous. However, if it is accompanied by headache, dizziness, neck and shoulder pain, numbness of the upper limbs and other symptoms, and if the symptoms are aggravated or reduced after the ringing, it is necessary to go to the hospital as soon as possible to clarify the cause of the ringing and treat it as soon as possible according to the cause.
