The exact pathogenesis of glaucoma is not particularly well understood, but there is a genetic link. If one parent or sibling has glaucoma, then the rest of the family is much more likely to have glaucoma than normal. In addition, abnormal development of the trabecular meshwork can also cause glaucoma, but it is not clear why the trabecular meshwork develops abnormalities. The incidence of glaucoma increases with age, and it is recommended that people aged 45-50 and older should have their eye pressure and fundus checked regularly for early detection of glaucoma.
