Can fever cause convulsions?

Fever can cause convulsions, a phenomenon mostly seen in children called febrile convulsions, which is a common emergency in pediatrics. Fever, also called febrile fever, is a dysfunction of the thermoregulatory center due to various reasons, causing heat production to be greater than heat dissipation, thus regulating an increase in body temperature. Fever can have some adverse effects on the human body, causing intracranial vasodilatation, metabolic dysfunction or disorders of brain cells, causing abnormal discharges of brain neurons, which can lead to involuntary neuromuscular twitching of the innervated muscles. Because of the underdevelopment of the brain in children, it is more common to be affected by fever, while it is generally less common in adults. However, fever caused by some central nervous system diseases, such as meningitis B, epidemic meningitis, and toxic encephalitis, can cause convulsions even in adults. Therefore, when fever with convulsions occurs, it is necessary to consult a doctor in time, complete the corresponding examination, make a clear diagnosis and take targeted treatment.
