Is edema in the elderly always a disease?

With age, the function of the organs of the elderly gradually decreases and the metabolic process of the body gradually weakens, resulting in various aging phenomena. Edema is one of the most common manifestations. It manifests as generalized edema, especially lower limbs edema, heavy limbs, lighter in the morning, and more in the afternoon. This is mainly due to the decrease in physiological functions of the elderly and the increase in permeability of blood vessel walls, which is called senile edema. How to determine whether edema is caused by disease or senile edema? Since there are many diseases that cause edema, as seen in cardiovascular diseases, liver diseases, malnutrition diseases, endocrine diseases can cause edema, and others due to intravascular thrombosis, glucocorticoids and other drugs, female menstruation, etc. can also cause edema. After the doctor’s examination, the results are not abnormal, and it can be considered as senile edema. For senile edema, we should pay attention to low-salt diet and appropriate water intake. Western medicine is a diuretic, but it is easy to cause electrolyte disorders. Chinese medicine is the best way to treat senile edema.
