Can you donate blood for high blood pressure?

China’s current “Blood Donor Health Examination Requirements” (GB18467-2011), approved by the General Administration of Technical Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and the State Standardization Administration, was officially released and implemented on July 1, 2012. The document stipulates that blood cannot be donated for hypertension. 1. The “Requirements for Health Examination of Blood Donors” (GB18467-2011) stipulates that: the age of blood donation is advocated by the state to be 18 to 55 years old; the age can be extended to 60 years old for multiple donors who have no previous reactions to blood donation and meet the health examination requirements and request to donate blood again on their own initiative. 2. This requirement is stated in Article 7.1.3. The general examination of blood donors: blood pressure 12.0Kpa (90mmHg) ≤ 18.7Kpa (140mmHg) systolic, 8.0Kpa (60mmHg) ≤ 12.0Kpa (90mmHg) diastolic, pulse pressure difference: ≥30mmHg/4.0Kpa. 3. This requirement is stated in Article 6.1.2. Article 6.1.2 stipulates that blood donors with one of the following conditions cannot donate blood: patients with circulatory system diseases, such as hypertension, various heart diseases, etc. 4. The requirement is stated in Article 6.2.11 that blood donors cannot donate blood temporarily if they have one of the following conditions: those who have taken oral drugs that inhibit or impair platelet function (such as drugs containing aspirin or aspirin-like drugs) for less than five days after stopping the drug, cannot donate platelets and whole blood for platelet preparation. And in the actual clinical situation, hypertensive patients need to take aspirin for a long time under the premise of good blood pressure control. In summary, it is clear from China’s current “Health Examination Requirements for Blood Donors” that patients with hypertensive status, those who have been diagnosed with hypertensive disease, and especially those who have been taking oral aspirin for a long time with hypertensive disease are not suitable for blood donation.
