Patients with early stage dementia can undergo several tests: Patients can visit a neurology clinic, where the doctor will give the patient a physical and neurological examination, including checking the patient’s responsiveness, muscle strength, muscle tone, the patient’s ability to coordinate movements, and balance. Laboratory tests include routine blood and urine tests and biochemical tests. EEG can detect early wave amplitude reduction in patients, and CT and MRI of the head can be done. CT head examination shows brain atrophy and ventricular enlargement, and MRI head examination shows atrophy in the temporal lobe and hippocampus bilaterally. A neuropsychological examination is also performed, mainly using an intelligence scale. The assessment should be done in terms of memory function, speech function, reaction ability, ability to apply things, orientation, etc. The commonly used scale is the Simple Mental Status Inventory.
