Indications for atrial septal defect surgery

Atrial septal defect is a common congenital cardiac anomaly with late onset and mild symptoms. The indications for surgery are as follows: 1) left-to-right shunt caused by atrial septal defect; 2) frequent respiratory infections and weight loss; 3) right atrial enlargement or tricuspid regurgitation based on echocardiography. Atrial septal defect surgery is generally divided into classical surgery, minimally invasive surgery or interventional occlusion. The advantage of interventional occlusion is that it does not require incision, but it can only be performed if there is enough tissue around the defect to fix the occlusion device.
