How far is diabetes from us?

Although diabetes is an ancient disease, it has become a common disease that endangers human health in modern society. Before the 1960s and 1970s, there were not many diabetics around us, and we only heard the footsteps of diabetes from afar. But now we often hear the name “diabetes”, perhaps among our friends and relatives, or even ourselves unknowingly suffering from diabetes, as if diabetes came to us overnight. According to WHO, the incidence of diabetes is increasing year by year in all countries of the world, and it has become the third chronic disease after tumor and cardiovascular diseases, and the situation is quite serious. It is estimated that the total number of people suffering from diabetes in the world was about 120 million in 1994, 135 million in 1997, and 175 million in 2000; it is predicted to be about 239 million in 2010 and 300 million in 2025, with a 45% increase in developed countries and a 200% increase in developing countries, and diabetes will be prevalent in China, India and some developing countries in Africa in the 21st century. In the 21st century, diabetes will be prevalent in China, India and some developing countries in Africa. According to the survey, the prevalence of diabetes in China in 1994 was 2.5%, and the number of people with diabetes in some major cities has reached about 4%, which is 3-4 times more than the 0.67% in 1980. Although the prevalence of diabetes in China is lower than in developed countries and some developing countries, the total number of people with diabetes is the second highest in the world due to the large population base, which is now at least 30 million, and 60-70% of them are undetected. 2/3 of those diagnosed are poorly controlled and 1/3 of them are very severe. Therefore it can be said that diabetes has now come to you and me.
