hiv antibody test method

There are currently three main methods of testing for HIV antibodies. The first is the primary screening test, which is performed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, agglutination, or immunochromatography, and can detect antibodies from the patient’s blood, serum, or urine after the window period of AIDS, which is 1-3 months after being infected. However, because of the window period, this method cannot diagnose patients with acute infection. The second is a confirmatory test, which is usually done by immunoblotting, strip immunoassay and immunofluorescence tests. The third method is the rapid test for HIV antibodies, the kit for this test has been approved for marketing in the United States, but the corresponding test has not been carried out in China. At present, China’s testing methods, firstly, take the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the initial screening of HIV antibodies, and then use the immunoblot test to confirm the diagnosis, and stipulate that the screening and confirmation of HIV antibodies can only be used for the testing of blood specimens, not for urine or other specimens.
